Opened in 2002 on the Grand Hornu site, 15 minutes from Mons, the Musée d’Arts Contemporains (le MACs) is another example of investment in culture aimed at injecting life into a region, Mons Borinage in this case. Today people talk about the Grand Hornu, the MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which was unimaginable 15 years ago. Can this resuscitate the entire region? “We have certainly helped restore a bit of pride to the district’s residents”, Dominique Cominotto, secretary general of the MACs admits. “But a museum can’t pull an entire region into a positive spiral on its own. We are just a piece in a larger puzzle that also includes public and private investors, social work, etc. On our own scale, we all participate in the movement. ”
